Bible and Popular Culture PDF
By:Philip Leroy Culbertson,Elaine Mary Wainwright
Published on 2010 by Society of Biblical Lit

In popular culture, the Bible is generally associated with films: The Passion of the Christ, The Ten Commandments, Jesus of Montreal, and many others. Less attention has been given to the relationship between the Bible and other popular media such as hip-hop, reggae, rock, and country and western music; popular and graphic novels; animated television series; and apocalyptic fantasy. This collection of essays explores a range of media and the way the Bible features in them, applying various hermeneutical approaches, engaging with critical theory, and providing conceptual resources and examples of how the Bible reads popular culture—and how popular culture reads the Bible. This useful resource will be of interest for both biblical and cultural studies. The contributors are Elaine M. Wainwright, Michael Gilmour, Mark McEntire, Dan W. Clanton Jr., Philip Culbertson, Jim Perkinson, Noel Leo Erskine, Tex Sample, Roland Boer, Terry Ray Clark, Steve Taylor, Tina Pippin, Laura Copier, Jaap Kooijman, Caroline Vander Stichele, and Erin Runions.

The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi PDF
By:Kathie Lee Gifford
Published on 2018-03-06 by Thomas Nelson

As a lifelong student of Scripture, Kathie Lee Gifford has always desired a deeper understanding of God’s Word and a deeper knowledge of God Himself. But it wasn’t until she began studying the biblical texts in their original Hebrew and Greek—along with actually hiking the ancient paths of Israel—that she found the fulfillment of those desires. Now you can walk with Kathie on a journey through the spiritual foundations of her faith: The Rock (Jesus Christ): Hear directly from Kathie about her life-changing and ever-deepening connection with Jesus, the Lover of her soul. The Road (Israel): Explore dozens of ancient landmarks and historical sites from Israel, the promised land of God’s covenant. The Rabbi (God’s Word): Go beyond a “Sunday school” approach to the Bible by digging into the original languages and deeper meanings of the Holy Scriptures. As you journey through The Rock, The Road, and The Rabbi, you’ll also find additional content from Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel throughout the book. Jason’s insight into the Hebrew language, culture, and heritage will open your eyes to the Bible like never before. Come! Begin your journey toward a deeper faith through The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi.

Writing the Rapture PDF
By:Crawford Gribben
Published on 2009-02-02 by Oxford University Press

For the past twenty years, evangelical prophecy novels have been a powerful presence on American bestseller lists. Emerging from a growing conservative culture industry, the genre dramatizes events that many believers expect to occur at the end of the age - the rapture of the saved, the rise of the Antichrist, and the fearful tribulation faced by those who are |left behind.| Seeking the forces that drove the unexpected success of the Left Behind novels, Crawford Gribben traces the gradual development of the prophecy fiction genre from its eclectic roots among early twentieth-century fundamentalists. The first rapture novels came onto the scene at the high water mark of Protestant America. From there, the genre would both witness the defeat of conservative Protestantism and participate in its eventual reconstruction and return, providing for the renaissance of the evangelical imagination that would culminate in the Left Behind novels. Yet, as Gribben shows, the rapture genre, while vividly expressing some prototypically American themes, also serves to greatly complicate the idea of American modernity-assaulting some of its most cherished tenets. Gribben concludes with a look at |post-Left Behind| rapture fiction, noting some works that were written specifically to counter the claims of the best-selling series. Along the way, he gives attention not just to literary fictions, but to rapture films and apocalyptic themes in Christian music. Writing the Rapture is an indispensable guide to this flourishing yet little understood body of literature.

Eschatology and Space PDF
By:Vítor Westhelle
Published on 2012-09-14 by Palgrave Macmillan

This unique volume focuses on the subjects of time in the area of theology known as |eschatology,| the consideration of the fullness, the limit, and the goal of time. Westhelle's novel approach includes the role of place/space in eschatology alongside time. Considering one's spatial location in the understanding of time, he examines the influence of place and geographically-limited culture on eschatology and the contextual influence and limit culture has on one's understanding of eschatology. He traces the historical development of understandings of eschatology from the Bible to contemporary theology and adds his postcolonial/subaltern perspective. This is a fundamental reconsideration of what the theological categories of eschatology, apocalypse, and the end of time (both for the individual and the world in general) means in terms of biology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, politics, and geography.

Ethics PDF
By:James Wm. McClendon, Jr.,James William, Jr. McClendon
Published on 2002-09-01 by Abingdon Press

When it first appeared in 1986, James McClendon's Ethics laid claim to two compelling theological ideas: first, that a highly distinctive theological perspective characterizes the inheritors of the sixteenth century's radical reformation. At the heart of this perspective is what McClendon calls the baptist vision, a way of understanding the gospel that emphasizes the church's distinction from the world, and its continuity with the church of the New Testament. Second, that because of its emphasis on the centrality of discipleship, this radical reformation outlook insists that theology's first task is to discover and explore the shape of the church's common life as the body of Christ; hence McClendon's novel decision to begin the task of writing a systematic theology with a volume on ethics. Since its first publication, Ethics has been followed by Doctrine (1994), and Witness (2000). The completion of the overall work has brought into sharper focus many of the theological and ethical issues and concerns central to the baptist tradition. In this revised edition of Ethics, McClendon infuses his claim for the priority of ethics within the theological task with a new urgency, born of the fuller, more complete definition of the baptist vision that Doctrine and Witness have made possible. Ethics is central, he reminds us, because biblical faith rests on a set of distinctive practices that arise from our placement within a larger Christian story. In his revisions McClendon offers a more complete explanation of how the interaction of faithful practices and gospel story give rise to a way of life that is distinctively Christian.

The New Brothers Grimm and Their Left Behind Fairy Tales PDF
By:David T. Morgan
Published on 2006 by Mercer University Press

|This book is a critical review of the very popular Left Behind series, plus one of the books in the Left Behind: The Kids series, and the first book in a new series called Babylon Rising. The New Brothers Grimm examines the twelve volumes in the original series and one book each from the spin-off series, relating the story and the theological arguments of each book and then challenging those arguments. Ultimately, the author suggests that the theological premises set forth in the series are at best dubious and at worst theological snake oil.|--BOOK JACKET.

Mackenzie Allen Phillips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant, |The Shack| wrestles with the timeless question, |Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?| The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him.
